Perfectionism doesn’t do any good?

Tom Ford’s the best shows

The appearance, personal life and brilliant career of the designer and film director Tom Ford tell a different story: betting on flawlessness and hitting the jackpot is possible. Every success, however, has a price. Ford himself admits that he “may indeed be prone to obsessions.” But then adds: “The pursuit of perfection has served me well.” And indeed: by all appearances, Tom Ford’s perfectionism in no way hints at morbidity. We see the ideal image, but the process of achieving the ideal is left out of the picture.

Gucci Fall/Winter ’95

This collection was Tom’s debut for the Italian house. The sky blue satin blouse that Kate Moss wore on the runway remains a glamour fashion icon today. Madonna wore it to the MTV Video Music Award and it also returned to us as a reference for Ford’s spring 2021 collection. This collection awakened the dormant Gucci house.

Saint Laurent Fall 2001

In 1999, the Gucci Group added Saint Laurent to its ranks and Tom was again given the role of creative director, so that he was running luxury at the two legendary houses. Yves Saint Laurent himself rated highly the talent of Ford, who was in charge of the pret-a-porter line, and predicted his fame. In Tom’s collections there was everything that the couturier himself loved, but it sounded fresh and new: refined decadence, freedom, dandyism, with his trouser tuxedos, and perfect silhouettes.
